What is the MIB (Medical Information Bureau)?
It seems quite disturbing … MIB or Medical Information Bureau. Our imagination can quickly become a head of us as we picture men in long coats with headsets scavenging the local doctor for a piece of "Gotcha" of information. Take some of the mysteries of the MIB and how it affects underwriting term life insurance.
Firstly, what is the MIB? Let with which it opened. It was founded in 1902. It is essentially a repository of information jointly formed and used by insurance companies … life and health (where the distinction is applicable). It operates as a nonprofit in this endeavor. Essentially, Life insurance companies file the relevant health information that is accessible during the application process so that other carriers have access to health information for future applications / claims. What is the purpose of all this? Well, if a person makes a request for a blanket and a history of cancer or high cholesterol (say the paramedical exam) shows at once, the future carriers will be able to see this information if the applicant is seeking to apply the same with another carrier and the leaves of this information off the application. In a word, it medical information to collect data to compare what a cons applicant stating that their current application. This information is still reserved for two years contestability clause which means that the carrier must have proof of fraud or misrepresentation of information such as that provided by the MIB within 2 years from the date of the policy "effective to cancel the policy life. After this period of two years, the information remains in the MIB, but usually can not be used against the applicant to cancel coverage or avoid paying a claim for life insurance. This information would however affect the future life or medical applications that attempts the same person.
As far as life assurance goes, the MIB can not be used to deny coverage or charge a premium to pay but it defeats the purpose of having insurance life to be false or incomplete information that endangers the future of your policy.
There are certain rules that must comply with MIB. The applicant must be given written notice of a declaration of their health status can be provided to the MIB as a result of the application process life insurance. In addition, this authorization allows the MIB to provide this information to other insurers that demand this information when the application or when filing a claim. In addition, an applicant may request a copy of their information as it is to verify the accuracy the MIB. Medical information will be normally sent to the doctor's request. Essentially, the MIB must provide the applicant with the information it receives and what he can do with it.
What is our opinion on the MIB? In a perfect world without fraud and omission (or, better yet, the need for life insurance at all), we would not need the MIB. This is not the world and there is fraud and misrepresentation during the underwriting process for life insurance. The problem is that this fraud is directly related to life insurance rates you pay. Without the MIB, you would pay more to keep your insurance in-force life because of some bad apples who try to abuse the system. Is a necessary evil in our opinion. Ultimately, if you are honest and thorough insurance application you complete, the MIB is a non-issue.
