Take a Peek Into the 19th Century Black Country Via a Trip Down Dudley Canal Tunnel
The Dudley Canal Tunnel is the second-longest canal tunnel within the UK canal network. It spans a length of 2900 meters, although it’s not continuous. The three parts making up the Dudley Canal Tunnel are the Main Dudley Tunnel (2690 meters), Lord Ward’s Tunnel (179 meters) and Castle Mill Basin (31 meters). The tunnel is best known for its 19th century significance and the Black Country, where limestone mines were the norm. Underground tunnel trips are available for anyone interesting in learning about the spectacular tunnel heritage of UK. The Singing Cavern and Rock Tunnel within the Dudley Canal are quite popular among those who visit this marvelous piece of history. The Dudley Canal Trust, existing since the early 1960s, has been repairing and resorting the canal all throughout the years.
Closed in 1962 and reopened after protests in 1973, the Dudley Canal Tunnel’s Singing Cavern, Rock Tunnel, Little Tess Cavern and Castle Mill Basin were linked together via two new canal tunnels in 1989. The boat trips through the tunnel are provided by the Dudley Canal Trust and include audio-visual presentations along the trip, which takes around 45 minutes from start to end. The limited dimensions of the tunnel and the absence of a towpath makes the tunnel inaccessible for most boats and since there’s a lack of vents inside the canal, diesel engine boats are not permitted at all. Small battery-operated and paddling boats can cross the canal.
Besides the direct boat trips provided by the Dudley Canal Trust, visitors to the neighboring Black Country Living Museum are also offered the chance to explore the amazing tunnel history via ”legging” boats. Trilobite fossils can be seen in the Oolitic limestone located within the rock on Castle Hill and the granite-like rock formations, the musical tunes of the Singing Cavern and coal measures are all worth seeing.
There are plenty of hotels in Dudley, and after exploring the tunnels, museums and other sites in the region, you can spend a relaxing night at a nearby hotel.
What does butterfly or dudley nosed mean?
I have a male blue and white rat terrier. I have been looking at breed standards and characteristics of these dogs and in a lot of places ( books, magazines, websites ) it says that a butterfly or dudley nose is a fault but I never see any pictures of what this looks like. Could someone please explain? Thanks!
It is incomplete pigmentation. If yours is still very young, it might still fill in.
Depending on the breed it will vary in the level of severity of the fault. If it is small, or on the non-show side, and he is otherwise very nice, a judge may be willing to overlook it. If it is large and very noticeable, it will be a glaringly obvious fault.
I am generalizing, as I don’t know your standard.
Here is a good website about nose pigmentation
