The way I would solve this problem is like this.
Because you are trying to find the how much time will pass till the distance between them equals 1.5 miles I would start with a equation below there t is equal to the time passed in hours.
1.5 miles = (7mph * t) – ( 5mph * t)
1.5 = (7-5) * t ———- Factoring out the t
1.5 = 2 * t
1.5/2 = t
