What tax deductions do we get if our area was declared a disaster area from Hurricane Rita?
We had about 500.00 worth of damage to our house and property. We were without electricity for two weeks and lived with a generator which cost us about 40.00 a day for fuel. We received no help from FEMA or anyone else. How do I file any of this on my income tax?
You get to take a casualy loss on your Schedule A. You will need to report the date of the loss (hurricane date), indicate it was a Katrina or Rita Casualty, you get a deduction for the loss in value of your home/property. (ie the difference b/t the value of the home the day before the hurricane hit and the value the day after the hurricane hit)
