What is the best way to read and understand material in a really dry textbook?

I find myself getting distracted every few minutes, or just reading and forgetting what I’ve just read, and having to re-read the info, only to forget it again. How do I increase my concentration and retain more of what I’ve read? Thanks.

See what you should do is read a paragraph or two- summarize or paraphrase what ya just read and read the next two paragraphs and do the same. after doing this about 5 times, take a 5 minute break for water to refresh your brain from the information you just handled and review the last 10 paragraphs you had just read. skim through, ctach key facts and make sure you understand it before heading for the next 10 paragraphs…

* always remember not to chew more than you can swallow.. not everyone can understand as soon as they read the whole thing. this tip is longer but its worth it. read it 2 paragraphs at a time and take a break after 10 paragraphs- review, skim throught it, and go to the next 2 parapgraphs and do it all over.

** highlight the important key facts. dont go all crazy and highlight unnecessary info- then it will be a waste of ink, time, and you wont focus on the key facts b/c you have pretty much highlighted the dumb parts

*** relax… you sound stressed. dont wait till the last minute to read and start the night your professor assigns this reading. afterwards when you get an A ona quiz or something, treat yourself to 2 hrs of pampering with mani-pedis and a facial. However if you do bad, dont treat yourself and use the time you would have used if you got an A- use that time to review where you went wrong and review the info one more time
