how many assorted cichlids can go in my tank?

hi, i am going to be getting a 50 gallon tank, and i was wondering, if any how many assorted types of cichlids could go in the tank, and what different kinds. I would like some variety. I can also get heaters and filters.
i just want the tank for something interesting to watch, and not breeding. I would like to have as many fish as possible in my tank

If you’re new to fish (I’m assuming that you are based on your other question) you do NOT want cichlids. Cichlids are great fish and can be very interesting and beautiful, but most are aggressive and territorial and not for beginners. African cichlids (probably what you’re interested in) in particular like to rumble. They can only be kept in African communities and even then they’ll fight and occasionally kill one another. Cichlids always need more space than other fish, which means that you won’t be able to keep nearly as many fish as you would if you went with something else. Plus, you’d need a lot of money worth of large rocks to create a proper African cichlid habitat in a 50 gallon.

You’ll need a filter and heater for any fish that you get. You mentioned a variety of sizes in your other question, so I’d suggest that you go with a tropical community. It’ll probably be a lot less hassle and much more enjoyable for you than cichlids, especially since you can have a lot more fish and more activity this way. Find a species of tetra that you like for a smaller schooling variety (neons, cardinals, rummynose, etc.). For the cleanup crew some corydoras would be a good option, or loaches if you prefer. You could get some platies or dwarf gourami as “middle” sized fish, and rainbowfish as larger centerpiece fish. Eventually you could add some dwarf cichlids like German Blue rams, which do well in communities.

The best thing you can really do is go to whichever local pet/fish store (not chain store like Petsmart) has the best variety in your area and see what they have. Take a notepad along and write down the name of anything you really like, then go home and research it to see if it would be compatible in a community. Avoid cichlids, puffers, and most catfish. Your new tank will need to be cycled for 4-6 weeks without fish anyways, so you’ll have plenty of time to figure out what you’d like. Good luck!
