how to make my german shephard puppy more active?
my puppy was initially less active (as it seemed to me) but he was friendly and playful
but he was away frm me fr abt two weeks. he jst abt 3 months old.
i he kinda seems depressed and scared.
he was physically punished for peeing in the house (which i strongly opposed) and now is scared of loud noises and swift movements.
help me out fellas, he is my 1st pet and very very close to my heart!! please tell me what should i do!!
You made a BIG mistake by abandoning him when you did – the period 13 through 16 weeks old is when pups need security.
You made another mistake passing him to someone whose ideas on puppy-raising don’t match yours. Far better would have been to put him into a boarding kennel.
You probably also made a mistake right at the start, choosing a puppy with poor genetics for temperament.
You can’t “make” him “active”, although if he is genuinely inactive (not just too scared to DO anything) he might need testing for thyroid levels.
You can’t “make” him suddenly trust you again. It will take time.
The more he is WITH you, the better. When you take him for on-lead walks, do NOT force him to advance when he is worried about something or someone – stand still and silent until HE decides to ignore or investigate, at which stage you praise him, preferably simultaneously rewarding him with a pat or rub or tidbit.
Work on inuring him to the noise aspect at home – work out which noises bother him, then make them from a considerable distance; gradually get closer over a period of days, maybe weeks if he is really terrified of them. As an example: When I feed my litters I start by dropping an empty plastic bottle a few metres away (the best pups race to check it out, then race back to the food), and a few days later can drop an empty metal can just a foot away from them.
To inure him to the sudden movements, make them in a small way from a good distance, pause, then call him to you & reward him for coming. Don’t extend the scope & speed of the movement until he has ignored the smaller version for a couple of days.
I hope you are already booked in to a training class that starts when your pup will be 20-22 weeks old. There, the instructor coaches you to improve your techniques, and at the same time your pup learns to pay attention regardless of what other dogs & people are doing. But you DO need to have your pup’s trust before starting.
• Add http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source to your browser’s Bookmarks or Favorites so that you can easily look up such as feeding, vaccinations, clubs, weights, teething, neutering, disorders.
• Join some of the 400+ YahooGroups devoted to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects they like to talk about, and how active they are. Those are where you will get knowledgeable answers to your questions; and unlike YA they are set up for follow-ups to clarify points, and allow photos.
