Where’ do they get so many bear skin to make bear skin hat?

How do the Napoleonic age soldier manage to get so many bear skin to make their hat. Look at the French Horse Grenadier, there were at least 10000 of them in the Imperial guard. where did they get so many bear in the Europe? Why the bear not extinct? Or they just use the synthetic one, and how do they produce it?

Brown bears in Europe could be very large so I’m guessing that even one could be used to make several hats. Worldwide, the bear population was much higher in those days than it is now. Take the US for example, the grizzly has been eliminated from 98% of its land and there are only about 1000 left in the lower 48. Europe is a big continent and it is likely that there were 100,000 plus bears there in the olden days.
