Village Living: Second Home Delights
If you long life at a slower pace, where neighbors and friends to interact in a village context classical parameters, we have some suggestions on places to visit and perhaps to live. Our review of great vacation and second home spots ranges Western Massachusetts, on the shores of Lake Champlain in Vermont and New York, the Upper Valley of New Hampshire Sea of Rhode Island. We will start our tour in the mountains of western Massachusetts Berkshire.
Stockbridge, Massachusetts
Stockbridge is a small village nestled in a peaceful valley in the hills of Berkshire. His sun-dappled streets and classic architecture made it emblematic of the picturesque village New England. It is fitting that one of the chroniclers of the arts in Stockbridge was Norman Rockwell, whose portrayal of small town life romantic evokes a simpler time, unhurriedly and good neighborliness.
The small downtown seems Rockwell painting come to life. With small, at locally owned shops, tidy, wide streets and sidewalks, kids bike, beautiful churches, and many examples of well maintained and diversified the New England architecture, Stockbridge has a welcomed respite from the frantic pace of 21st century America.
The Stockbridge Berkshire hills around offer a wide variety of four season activities. There are more than 90,000 acres of recreational land, more than 90 lakes and ponds, parks, golf courses and ski resorts. Stockbridge cultural references including the famed Tanglewood Music Festival and the Berkshire Theatre Festival.

The next two cities on our tour of villages and village life from the North a particular link, even if they are in different states. Essex, New York and Charlotte, Vermont are separated, some say joined by a 20 minute trip by ferry across beautiful Lake Champlain.
Charlotte, Vermont
The city of Charlotte is sitting on a series of hills and ridges overlooking Lake Champlain about ten miles south of the bustling city of Burlington. Vermont Magazine said: "… It is a city dominated by rural landscapes, by farmland, the hills and orchards, it is also – quietly, to be sure – part of Vermont from the Gold Coast. "
Charlotte is a city with multiple attractions. It is fairly close to Burlington to access large stores, restaurants and nightlife, but it is a bucolic, pastoral place, with a sense of community spirit, manifested through a commitment to excellent schools, a new city hall and a large local gathering places, the Old Brick Store. Its residents bridge the spectrum between the farmers of several generations, artists, writers and professionals of all stripes.

Essex New York
Essex is located on the shores of Lake Champlain and in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. It is sometimes called the most historic hamlet New York. Why this name? Among other reasons, Essex is one of the finest collections of architecture before the civil war in the country. Supervised by a beautiful lake and the majestic Adirondack Mountains of New York, Essex has welcomed visitors and second homeowners for many years. Another particularity of this place full Charming, is that in the blue waters of Lake Champlain is the vista of green mountains of Vermont.
There are many activities available year-round in and around the city, including trout fishing first class or on the Boquet River salmon or the broad, deep waters of Lake Champlain. Biking, canoeing and kayaking, hiking and bird watching are very popular in summer spring and fall. And of course sailing and power boating Lake Champlain are among the best are in the Northeast. There are many high mountains, trails, rivers and streams in half an hour from the village. Most near hiking trails are nearby Split Rock Reserve, a tract of 3,000 acres where many trails hug the shores of Lake Champlain. Golfers find 10 challenging courses in the half past two in the car. Summer theater, concerts and special events round out the top hot activity. Winter activities include backcountry skiing and great skiing, or ice climbing more adventurous. Lebanon, New Hampshire
In the heart of an area covered by the inhabitants the upper valley, Lebanon is about halfway up the state of New Hampshire.
The city is set in tradition New England fashion, with a square of two acres, with a bandstand in the center. The square is led by an impressive collection of traditional buildings Location with beautiful facades, including the town hall, a library and a splendid gem, Lebanon Opera House. This facility 880 seats and superb acoustics, the theater is the largest proscenium in the Upper Valley. After more than eighty years of presenting quality musical and theatrical performances, the opera remains a key element of cultural life in and around Lebanon.
Lebanon is only a few miles south of Hannover, the home of Dartmouth College, which offers all year many cultural events in the place of venue Centre multi Hopkins. Movies, musicals and drama, including opera, are held throughout the year.
Much of the park housing in the historic district is composed of majestic colonial, Federal and Victorian houses, a legacy of the wealth of the owners of mill the 19th century. Narragansett, Rhode Island
The town of Narragansett hugs the Atlantic Ocean along 26 miles of the coast (including Pettasquamscutt Cove and Narrow River). This coastline is long varied and developed the New England secondary residences in the summer since the early 1900s. Over the summer, the population threefold. Designed in 1883 by the famous architect Stanford White, the granite towers of three storeys, topped by a conical roof, are connected by one piece long gallery. Unfortunately, the main building of the casino burned down in 1900. The Light, 130 feet long Great Hall, built with walls of fields, with windows on three sides, still offers a spectacular view to take in the views of the Atlantic, and suggests the beauty and opulence Casino long gone.
