Antique German Dolls – A Little History

Since 1840 through to early 1920, some of the best dolls ever created, were produced in Germany.

The first dolls, often referred to as Parian (meaning biscuit undyed) were created in famous pottery factories in Copenhagen and Dresden. These dolls had beautifully delicate molded features, including non- only their faces, their hair, but often with molded ribbons, bows, snood, flowers and sometimes a collar. Delicate exacting colorations made every one of these dolls a work of art. These dolls are rare and precious.

Their popularity peaked in the late 1870s and can be dated by their hairstyles. Parian Bisque led to the more common dolls china head. Antique German dolls continue to appreciate in value. The quality and talent put in each doll is made increasingly appreciated by collectors of antique dolls as the years pass.
