I am both a former literature major and an Austen fan, as well as a writer. Pride and Prejudice has been established by many literary critics as a book of literary merit. Said merit lies in Austen’s expert characterization, good use of plot and great eye for human behavior and heart for conflict, as well as her tremendous humor, spot-on use of irony and sarcasm. Her wit, sometimes mordant, is delicious. So, yeah, this is a book of literary merit as is Sense and Sensibility, and even Emma.

Alice in Wonderland is a classic of children’s literature and a definite book of literary merit. It showcases Lewis Carroll’s talent for finding the sublime in the mundane and elevating nonsense to an art form. The case could even be argued that it is one of the first fantasy novels. It is also a fantastic (pun intended) study in linguistics and the ambiguity and sometimes arbitrary nature of expression.

Other books of literary merit: Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations. Melville’s Moby Dick (though I find it quite boring). The Scarlet Letter; To Kill A Mockingbird; Heart of Darkness; A Confederacy of Dunces; The Kite Runner (being more modern does not make a book less worthy). The Handmaid’s Tale; Things Fall Apart; Brave New World; As I Lay Dying; The Sound and The Fury (almost anything by Faulkner). The Sun Also Rises; The Sound of Waves; A Lesson Before Dying; Beloved; Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistle Stop Cafe; How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents; Huckleberry Finn; The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe; One Hundred Years of Solitude.
