1990 KMX 125, slight rattle top end, last piston was badly worn,I fitted another one but rattle still persists?
I presume that the cylinder needs re sleeving as it is a chrome bore, but my question is will i get away with fitting a 0.5 milli over sized piston and rings.
The original is 54mm, I can upgrade to 54.5milli
Will my engine seize if i do this?
Have a ring round your local bike shop’s to to have it measured up and then if needed to see who can have the barrel honed out to the next over size and then fit the appropriate sized piston kit, they can be over bored up to 2mm oversize so you have got a good few years use to go yet, plenty of places who can do the work advertise in the back of MCN and other bike mag’s.
The only time it will need a re sleeve is if the barrel has been badly scored by a piston breaking up or a gudgeon pin cir-clip coming out etc.
Have the power valve checked cleaned and re shimmed if needed while you have the barrel off, will save any problems later on with rattles and vibrations and reduce the risk of it failing and wrecking the barrel and piston.
Give it a good 100miles or a couple of hours gentle running in after it’s rebuilt an it will be fine.
