Monkeys and Gorillas

Many people consider monkey stuffed animals to be a lot of fun! When you have this type of stuffed animal “hanging around”, you are always reminded of the cute and energetic little creatures that love swinging from one tree to another, munching on bananas, and finding their fair share of mischief! Whether you want a small stuffed monkey or a large stuffed gorilla, it is important to learn a little bit about these fascinating creatures. There are many different types of monkeys and each of these types has been discovered to have their own form when it comes to adaptations. Most of these little creatures are considered to be what is called “Arboreal”. This is a fancy way of saying that they live in trees, much like other animals like the parrot. There are a few types that are identified as being “Terrestrial”. Of course, this means that they typically live on the ground. While both the arboreal and the terrestrial monkeys have the capability of latching on to and moving among branches with their feet as well as their hands, those that live in trees are typically able to use their tales to latch on to branches and move from one location to another.

The tails of the monkeys that are functional and allow them to move from one location to another or latch on to a branch are called “Prehensile”. These highly functional tails are exceptionally beneficial to the creatures that possess them. Seeing that they are highly functional, they can assist in movement, latching on to small and even large branches, but they can also help the creature in picking up items such as food, various types of flowers, an assortment of fruits, seeds, eggs, and even insects and relatively small mammals! When scientists study monkeys, they typically identify them into two groups. The first group is referred to as “Old World” and the second group is referred to as “New World”. The creatures that are located in the regions of Asia and even in Africa are considered to be “Old World”. Examples of these types of monkeys include the baboon and even the amazing colobus. Those that are identified as “New World” monkeys are located in the regions of South America and Central America. In addition to this, those monkeys found in Mexico are considered to be monkeys that are “New World”. Examples of these types include the spider monkey and the squirrel monkeys. Interestingly enough, scientists have discovered that the DNA of these primates is almost identical to that which a human possess. The figures are averaged between 98% and 99% – which is amazing for many to learn! These primates use a method known as “Knuckle-Walking” to move from one location to another. As far as size is concerned, they average in at over five feet as an adult and could weigh up to four hundred fifty pounds.
