How is the Great Pyrenees a good guard dog, its a giant teddy bear that can’t even hurt a fly?
I mean the dog looks like a huge teddy bear, a giant cuddly teddy bear that can’t even harm a fly. I never got how people can compare it to the German Shepherd or the Rottweiler, the thing won’t even stand a chance against a bull terrier let alone one of those dogs.
A family I know owns one and it is a giant softy. It is like an overly sized golden retriever, how can it even be a good guard dog? It can’t scare anything.
You obviously have not seen the dog in action when it recognized an intruder or predator. One person here has a pyr who stood between her and a man who accosted her, and, when the attacker ignored the dog’s warning, and threatened her verbally as well as grabbed onto her and would not let her go when she wanted to leave, the dog bit the man who then required a huge number of stitches. The man was a criminal and the dog intervened first by placing itself between owner and attacker. That’s one of the things pyrs do to protect you.
Another thing they do is charge at the intruder barking to intimidate and scare the intruder away. The dog you know also knows YOU. He recognizes your smell from a good distance.
Pyrs have been known to be able to kill pit bulls. You haven’t looked at those teeth inside it’s mouth, obviously.
Pyrs are gentle giants. They will intervene first – or charge and bark to intimidate. Attacking is their action of last resort. Be glad you’ve not seen the pyr need to go into attack mode. Never bait a pyr to test it. That would be a really stupid thing to do.
While pyrs were bred as livestock guardians, they will guard all family members, from the humans to the cats and even the pet rabbits. They need a job to do and, if there’s no livestock, they will guard the rest of the pack (family) -!-
