What happens to the Moa Bird

The Moa bird was a large bird. However, the biggest moa was the Giant Moa. He greater than three meters long and weighed nearly 250 kilograms. The giant moa was one of the largest of all birds ever known in the world. Nevertheless, there were smaller moa birds. The smallest moa species was a little larger in size than Turkey and about half a meter high.

Scientists have gathered much information about the bird moa through fossils (bones) that are found all around New Zealand. For hundreds of years, these birds were extinct. Some were as big as the Big Bird of Sesame Street. But most have little not much larger than our average turkey. These birds were being eaten to extinction and other species of birds, by Maori. These birds were unable to fly.

At their last count, there were eleven different species of bird. They were mainly forest dwellers and not the prairie. Another surprising discovery about the bird, that they probably did not walking with their heads in the air, unlike some of the museum mounts that we see today. Even if they are off today you can still find their bones, mainly in caves, swamps and sand dunes. However, they are not the only extinct New Zealand birds.

The question of how the moa bird was off his answers with scientists. They say that these birds live in New Zealand, where Maori are arrived, but we still believed that the moa bird has completely disappeared in 1769 when Captain Cook arrived in New Zealand.

Part of land has been authorized by the Maori people, who killed the bird directly or reduced habitat. However, the main reason why the bird has disappeared because of hunting. The moa bird was an obvious source of food in a land without mammals except of the bat. Moa bones were found in some of the clusters (these cases are huge amounts of food remains are found) around New Zealand. From the bones were discovered on the sites Midden, scientists have discovered and learned about different species of the bird and have reached to a conclusion that over hunting was the main reason why the bird has disappeared now.

Scientists also believe that the bird moa was extinct in 1500 and nobody has really ever seen the bird alive. But ate stories that would make us believe that there were a few of these birds in New Zealand when Captain Cook and his men arrived. There have stories that were even been said in the 1900s that would make people believe that there was still a moa bird roaming the forests New Zealand.
