How do you get that vintage look in the photograph?

I started getting serious about my photography a year or two and after seeing a large number of photos posted on Deviant Art, I noticed how many of them have this kind of vintage, lost quality, but still contain enough color and not end up turning yellow as mine does. Has anyone advice on how to achieve this effect or what type of photo editing program I might need?

If you want to watch it disappear but still have color, just desaturate the image. This is very easy to do in Picasa (free download from Google). You can also add film grain in Picasa, which will certainly give you the sense that you look old.
