do my neighbors need our permission to put stuff on our joint retaining wall?

We have a retaining wall that we share with our neighbors. They are awful, and we can see into their bathroom at night(not a pretty sight). We asked them to put up curtains, they put a hideous piece of trellis on top of the wall. Don’t they need our permission to put something on the joint wall? I thought you could build on your own side but not on top of a joint fence or wall. Am I wrong?

If the wall is truly on the lot line between your and your neighbor’s house, then they can build whatever they want as long as it is on their side of the fence or wall. Basically if it goes over the lot line then it is on your lot and you can remove it, or have them remove it. If the wall is half on your lot and half on their lot then they can build up on their half of the wall as long as it doe not hang over to your side. Find you lot line markers before you approach them to make sure of your point.
