How do I choose a mohair cinch size?
I am looking to buy an Equine Classic brand mohair cinch and was wondering what size I needed to buy since I know mohair stretches. My horse uses a 32in wool cinch, but she is a bit cinchy with that and it tends to slip when we go any faster than a walk. She’s my sweetheart so I want to make her as comfortable as possible but I can’t afford to go buying 3 or 4 cinches when only one will fit best. Can anyone offer any suggestions?
Just to clarify, I am tightening all the way and the saddle fits her just fine. The slippage that I am referring to isn’t significant, I suppose I should say more of a shifting of sorts and is minimal.
If it’s slipping, your cinch is too loose. Make sure that your saddle fits- some horses get girthy/cinchy if they have sore backs or if in the past they have had the girth or cinch tightened all the way quickly. Do it in at least three tightenings- the first just snug enough to keep the saddle from falling off is she shakes, the second, almost tight enough to mount, and the third, tight enough to walk and trot with. Remember to always check your cinch again before your canter or lope, as by this time the saddle has settled more on the back and the cinch or girth is often a little loose. If she’s crabby about having it tightened anyway, she’s going to have to get over it and you’re going to have to tighten it securely anyway because it is way more dangerous to ride a horse with a loose cinch or girth than it would be to ride them bareback.
As for the mohair cinch, I would go with maybe one size smaller than you usually use, so likely a 30″ would work. Try it on and If it’s too big/small, just take it back to the store and exchange it (obviously before you ride with it).
