Tips for the First Online Dating Email

Whether you’re sending the first email to someone you’re interested in or responding to an email another online dating service member has send you, it’s important to set the right tone. That first email is crucial – the other person’s first impression of you beyond your profile is made when they read your initial email. I’ve put together a few tips to make your first email one that generates interest and leaves them wanting more.

Keep in light and friendly. The first email should be fun and interesting. Save the heavy discussions and personal information for later in the relationship. This email should be casual; you want to seem open but not needy.
Don’t mention the exes. No one wants to hear the horror story of your last failed relationship. Nothing says “excess baggage” like constant references to your ex.
Don’t complain about others you’ve corresponded with. If you joke about how the last two people you corresponded with were real losers and kind of creepy, the person will wonder if he or she is next up on your list of losers. No one likes the feeling that, in the future, you might be making jokes at their expense.
Do mention something you found interesting in their profile or first email. Ask a question about their profile information or mention that you share a common interest. It will let them know you were really paying attention and aren’t just considering them a pretty picture.
Keep your first email short. It should be an introduction, not your autobiography. It’s better to leave them hoping for more than to have their eyes glaze over on page three of an endless ramble. Two to three paragraphs is about right.
Don’t forget to spell check and proofread your email. Sloppy writing and misspelled words will give the wrong impression. They will think you either rushed through it, don’t care about details, or are simply uneducated and not too bright.
Try reading your email out loud before sending it. You may realize that what you meant as a joke doesn’t read like it on paper. Sarcasm in particular doesn’t translate right when you don’t already know the other person extremely well.
Be patient. Even a beautifully crafted first e-mail may not get an immediate response. Perhaps he was out of town for a few days. Maybe she had a prior work commitment. Don’t assume they aren’t interested if they don’t respond immediately. Give them at least three days to get back to you.

My prom date my junior year was 4’11″ and I was 6’4″ at the time. I know that’s even worse than what you’re describing, but height doesn’t matter if you like the person. Don’t concern yourself with your height or his either. If you like him, then date him.
