Mary Magdalene
Mary Magdalene
It was called "Madeleine" because she was a city of Galilee called "Magdalene" ("tower"), mentioned only in Matt. 15:39. In the parallel passage in Mark 8:10 this place is called Dalmanutha. He was on the west shore of Lake Tiberias, and is probably the small obscure village called el-Mejdel, about 3 miles northwest of Lake Tiberias. In the Talmud this city is called "the city of colors, and a particular district of it was called" the tower of dyers. The indigo plant was much cultivated.
Marie-Madeleine is a very important person in the New Testament, and somehow controversial, just as St. Peter. – From Peter who denied the Lord Jesus took a Saint. – On a prostitute, Jesus brought to St. Mary Magdalene, a faithful disciple, this Calvary's funeral and just after the Resurrection, "The Apostle of the Apostles," says John Paul II, because Jesus had ordered, after the Resurrection, Go unto my brethren and say to them: "I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God .'… and Madeleine does exactly that. Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them what he had said these things to her. ((Jn.20 :17-18).
First encounter with Jesus, Magdalene is mentioned only in Matt. 3:39 p.m., at the end of the miracle of Jesus feeding the 4.000 (Mat.15 :29-39) and probably Mary Magdalene met Jesus for the first time during this miracle in the vicinity of Magdala.
First mention of Mary Magdalene: a prostitute?
The first time it is mentioned in the Bible is in Luke 8:03: After that, Jesus walked around a town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had gone out; 3Joanna's wife Cuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna, and many others. These women were helping to support them on their own. (Lk.8 :1-3).
Mary Magdalene is mentioned that some women who have been healed of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had gone out; (Lk.8 :1-3). Thus, according to Dr. Madeleine Domonguez is first mentioned in the Bible as a prostitute, it the meaning of Jesus drove seven demons from her. But now, she is already a good follower, even helped with his money, these women helped to support on their own. (Lk.8: 3).
Faces of Mary Magdalene:
Sixth century: in 591, Gregory the Great, "said the fact that Mary had worked as a prostitute: "She had coveted with the eyes of the earth, but now through penitence are consumed with tears … She turned the mass of the virtues of his crimes. "The pope has been criticized, but Dr. Dominguez believes he was right. He presented the Magdalene as" model for repentance. "
13th century: In 1275, Jacques de Voragine, a Dominican monk, author of "The Golden Legend" which was Mary Magdalene settled in France after the Resurrection. There, she preached the Gospel before retiring to a cave, in which place she had not the comfort of running water, no consolation of trees or grass. "The story has been among the most widely read Middle Ages.
20th century: in 1971, Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" presented the world a thoroughly modern Mary, powerful, pretty and even a prostitute. In his signature song, "I Do not Know How to love," she marveled effect of Jesus upon him: "He is just a man. And I had so many men before in very many ways, it is just one more. "
21st century: In 2003, "The Da Vinci Code" has said that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and conceived a child. Dr. Dominguez believes "The Da Vinci Code is the worst book and movie ever made about Mary Magdalene is a fantasy even more heretical and false, it is "ridiculous.
Magdalen Calvary and the tomb:
55Many women were there watching from afar. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for needs. 56Among was Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of Jacques and Joseph, and the mother of the son of Zebedee. (Mat.27: 55, Mc. 115:41, Lk.23: 55). the 57As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58Going to Pilate, he asked the body of Jesus and Pilate ordered that it be given. 59Joseph took the body, wrapped in a white shroud, 60and placed it in his new tomb that had cut into the rock. He rolled a big stone at the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there in front of the tomb. (Matt. 27:57-61).
The Magdalene after the Resurrection:
The four Gospels describe Jesus' resurrection, the first Sunday of the East and the four Gospels mention Mary Magdalene by name, all the Gospels in their final chapter, except John, who is the most extensive and allocate these last two chapters, 20 and 21. Madeleine was the first to see the open tomb, two angels appeared to him, and they asked: 13They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" (Jn.20) Now it is Jesus himself who appeared to Mary Magdalene: "They have taken my Lord, she said, "and I do not know where they have laid him." 14At this, she turned and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know it was Jesus. 15 "Woman," he said, "Why are you crying? Who do you want? Thinking it was the gardener, she said: "Sir, if you have away, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I'll get it. "16Jesus said," Mary. "She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic," Rabboni! "(Meaning Master). 17Jesus said," Do not take on me, because I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them: "I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." 18Mary Madeleine went to the disciples with the news: "I seen the Lord! "And she told them what he had said these things to her. (Jn.20). Here, Mary Magdalene Jesus commanded the apostles to go and give them a massage, it is the Apostle to the Apostles, as noted by John Paul II, Go instead to my brothers and tell them: "I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. "And that's exactly what Mary Magdalene went to 18Mary disciples with the news:" I saw the Lord! "And she told them what he had said these things for her. (Jn.20).
Le Madeleine could not touch Jesus in Jn.20, said: 17Jesus She Do not touch me because I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. (John 20:17, KJV) ..
Here is the description in the four Gospels:
John 20 The Empty Tomb
1Early first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2so she ran to Simon Peter and another disciple whom Jesus loved, and said: "They have taken the Lord from the tomb and we do not know where they dressed! "3SO Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5HE leaned over and looked into the linen bandages lying but not going in. 6Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and entered the tomb. He saw the strips of linen stretched there, 7aS and the burial cloth has been around Jesus' head. The fabric was folded by itself, separate from the canvas. 8Finally the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still have not understood from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) (Jn.20 :1-9) Appears to Mary Magdalene Jesus 10Then the disciples went away again their homes, 11but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head and the other foot. 13They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying? "They have taken away my Lord, she said, "and I do not know where they have laid him. "14At this, she turned and saw Jesus standing, but she does not realize that it was Jesus. 15 "Woman," he said, why are you crying? Who do you want? Thinking it was the gardener, she said: "Sir, if you've won, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I'll get it. "16Jesus said," Mary. "She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic," Rabboni! "(Meaning Master). 17Jesus said," Do not keep me because I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them: "I'm back to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." 17Jesus said to her, Do not touch me because I am not yet ascended to Father, but go to my brethren and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. (KJV). 18Mary Madeleine went to the disciples with News: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them what he had said these things to her.
Matthew 28 The Resurrection
1After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the tomb. 2There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat upon it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead people. 5The angel said to the women: "Do not be afraid, because I know you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6He is not here, he is risen, as he says. Come see the place where he lay. 7Then go fast and tell his disciples: "He is risen from the dead and goes before you into Galilee. You'll see. "Now I have told you." 8So women fled from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy and ran to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus meeting. "Hi," he said. They came to him, folded his feet and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee; then they see me. "guards" Report 11While women were on their way, some of the guards entered the city and reported to the Chief priests everything that had happened. 12When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, 13telling: "You have to say, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we slept. 14If this report happens to the governor, we will respond and help you avoid trouble. "15So the soldiers took money and did as they were loaded. And this History has been widely circulated among the Jews until this day.
Mark 16 The Resurrection
1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of Jacques, and Salome bought spices so that they can go to anoint Jesus' body. 2Very after the first day of the week just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3and they asked each other, "Who will roll away the stone from the entrance the tomb? "4But when they looked, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled. 5As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man wearing a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were worried. 6 "Do not worry," he said. "Looking Jesus the Nazarene who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7But go tell his disciples and Peter "He goes ahead of you into Galilee. You will see, as you said. "" 8Trembling and disoriented, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They did not tell anyone because they were afraid.
Luke 24 The Resurrection
1The first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered, they found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 4Every they wondered about this, suddenly two men in Civil shone like lightning stood beside them. 5In their fright the women bowed his face against the ground, but the men said, "Why are you looking the living among the dead? 6He not here, he is risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7'The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners, be crucified and the third day be raised again. "8Then they remembered his words. 9When their return from the tomb they told all these things to the Eleven and to all others. 10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary, Jacques' mother, and others with them who said that the Apostles. 11But they did not believe the women because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen stretched themselves, and went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
Apocryphal gospels and the Da Vinci Code ":
All of the above is the Bible, the Word of God " but there are more than 30 pounds heavier, called apocryphal or Gnostic, which are not in the Bible, and they have been declared heretical by the church centuries ago. In the Da Vinci Code there are even misquotations apocryphal books. For example, the Da Vinci Code claims that the Gnostic Gospel of Mary on Christ entrusted the Church to Mary Magdalene. It is not. It is about Jesus appearing to Mary Magdalene after the resurrection of Gnostic revelation it immediately to his disciples and followers, and arguing whether or not Jesus says something important for Harding woman.Dr recommends Karen King's The Gospel of Mary Magdalene.
The rivalry between the St. Mary Magdalene and Peter S.?:
Based mainly in the foregoing books and apocryphal Gnostic heretic some Gnostics often tried to imagine a rivalry between false Madeleine Saint-Pierre and Saint Mary … discrimination and even more imagination against women in the church of Christ, it is true that Mary Magdalene is never mentioned after the Gospels, nor in the Acts, nor in the Epistles. But Mary Magdalene is a saint for the Church, St. Mary Magdalene, and Peter never had a personal problem with St Mary Magdalene, according to the Bible, the Word of God.
However, Madeleine lives in another tradition that is found in an obscure text of the second century. Nicknamed "The Gospel of Mary," he portrays Mary as a leader of Jesus' followers in the days after resurrection. Written by Christians some 90 years after the death of Jesus and Mary is a "Gnostic gospel" the Gnostics, an important force in the early years of Christianity, stressed salvation through study and self-knowledge rather than simply through faith. The text has been lost for centuries until in fragments of a collector in Cairo in 1896.
In his story, Jesus gets up and disappears After teaching his disciples to "preach the good news about the kingdom. The exhortation makes them uneasy: Christ had died preaching this gospel. What was to save them from a similar fate? Marie, however, is serene. "Weep not be depressed and do not let not your hearts be irresolute, "she said." For his grace will be with you and shelter you. "Jesus," she said, it appeared to her in a vision where he gave a special knowledge of soul's journey through mystical realms. She tells the men she will help them understand the true teachings of Christ: "What you hide, I tell you."
His words seemed to sting more. Peter an angry man, "taking particular act." Did he really speak privately with a woman without our knowledge? asks. "Should we all turn and listen sound? "Generally, he is jealous:" Did he prefer her to us? "This is a question that shakes Christianity, after two millennia. For many feminists and liberal theology, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene suggests that the first witness of the Resurrection, was Apostle "to the apostles," a figure equal to (or even most-favored) the condition of men around Jesus, a woman so threatening that the apostles abolished its role, and those of other women, in order to establish a patriarchal hierarchy in the Church primitive.
For others, shaped by Orthodoxy, Mary has been an important player in the life and ministry of Jesus, but subordinated to men who followed him. Now, thanks to Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code", read by some 60 million people and is open in 3735 rooms film nationally, Mary Magdalene has a new role: wife of Jesus and mother of his child, Mary, who apparently escaped the Holy Land, triggered after the death of Jesus. According to the "Code", which opened to lukewarm reviews include, but strong box office, baby grew up to marry into a royal bloodline in France, and the descendants of Jesus and Mary is in Europe to date. In a notably, but purely fantasy scene, one character argues that the figure to Jesus' right in Leonardo's "Last Supper" is not a follower male, but Mary Magdalene, and that if one recasts the paint through "Mary" on the left of Jesus, they complement each other, men and women, while a man-a married couple, together for ever. It is cinematically intriguing, but like almost all of Brown's novel and the film is a fantasy, not fact, and not for the first time, Mary Magdalene is a vehicle of fiction feverish.
Mary Madeleine – literature, legends, politics and theology
From the beginning, the story of Mary Magdalene and Jesus was the substance of literature and legend, politics and theology, controversy and conflict. From age to age the image changes in the minds of believers and historians and artists reflected the zeitgeist, so it is difficult to recover the historical Mary Magdalene centuries of myth. Yet his story highlights the key issues, the role of women in first century Judaism to the nature of Jesus Ministry training early Christianity. Understanding their relationship with Jesus and the religion that came to bear his name offers a window on the fluid nature of faith, and tensions on sex and power that shape again in the third millennium since this morning before the empty tomb. Mary has always been a woman uncomfortable.
Although Gospel authors can not avoid mentioning her 13 times in the New Testament, they offer few details of his life. It was perhaps no coincidence: the Women were considered untrustworthy in the Roman world, and the Gospels, eager to make new converts, probably did not highlight that a woman was a key witness to the Resurrection of their history, a history that has already been quite difficult to explain. The Gospels New Testament "Tell us a woman called Mary Magdalene was a disciple of Jesus and played a role at the time of his betrayal and resurrection, says Elaine Pagels, professor of early Christian history at Princeton. "But beyond that they tell us very little about what his role really was." The researchers took part the tips of the New Testament provides.
Many have interpreted the observation of Luke that Mary and other women around Jesus "the use of their substance" as evidence that they provided financial support of the ministry of Jesus. But where the money is come? A marriage contract? A divorce settlement? An inheritance? A Job? The Gospels provide no direction, but a sign that women have played a role essential in the life of Jesus. Another detail: the name of Mary. Most women of the New Testament are identified by their relation to men (Mary, wife of Cleophas, by example, is different from Mary the mother of Jacques.) However, Madeleine is distinguished by his hometown, the port city of Magdala.
No husband appears always an explanation, perhaps, to know how she was able to travel freely with Jesus. Was she ever been married at all? "A free woman who never married probably would have been extremely rare, "says Ross Kraemer, a Brown University professor of religious studies. All The New Testament tells us really about Mary is that she entered the ministry of Jesus in his preaching throughout Galilee, she had been possessed by seven demons, but was not, and, of course, it announced the resurrection. We never learn his trade, the color of his hair, if she was old or young, ugly or beautiful. However, since the early hours of Christianity, there were other voice, too, those who are determined to present a fuller picture of Madeleine. In several Gnostic Gospels, texts whose dissemination in Last 50 years has transformed the study of Christian origins of his head, it is not the wallflower of the New Testament, but rather favor, may be preferred, a disciple of Christ. In the Gospel of Thomas, she and another woman, Salome, is one of six (not 12) true disciples of Jesus. In the Gnostic Dialogue of the Savior, it is called "the woman who understands all things."
More convincing is the Gospel Mary, not only for his portrait of the Magdalene as a woman strong, determined, but also for his radical views on sex. While Mary is called the "disciple Saviour's heart shot … more than all other women, she said, and Jesus see gender is irrelevant, something that will disappear in the path to the next life. "The paper argues that the distinction between men and women is one of the body, which will dissolve," says Harvard historian, Karen King. "The foundation of leadership lies in spiritual development." The non-canonical gospels provide a troubling answer. In the Gnostic texts, Mary is the subject of constant attacks, most often from Peter. "Tell Mary to leave us, he implores Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas," the Women are not worthy of life. "Mary understands his threat." I am afraid of Peter, "she said to Jesus in the Pistis Sophia Gnostic Dialogue." He threatened me and hates our race. "The pope has made his new reformed Mary a whore because he knew that the faithful need a history of penance which was both attractive and inspiring. The early Middle Ages were a time of great social turmoil of war and disease troubled nations and sent poor women in the streets.
Gregory church needed a character in the entourage of Jesus, who provided an answer to this misery, which proved that the path of Christ is an escape from the pressure of the sinful world. La Madeleine's mysterious history resurrection was peripheral enough to be reinvented. Finally, the Fathers of the Church have been able to put the woman at a disadvantage to good use. Christianity eagerly his new saint sinner.
The Cult-Madeleine
A cult spread in Europe Madeleine, England where Mary was the patron saint of lepers, to Florence, where prostitutes and young men held a race on the day of his feast. In Germany, the Sisters of Blessed Penitent Magdalene took the lead in reforming the woman capricious young men in Spain on stilts danced with the icon Mary in the streets. The French have been particularly attracted by la-Madeleine so smitten that, naturally, they made his French. In the 13th century, a Dominican monk published the Golden Legend, who said that after the death of Jesus and Mary fled Jerusalem and ended in southern Gaul. His mind the story says, sheltered by the French. There was no historical evidence to support this assertion, that the imagination of storytellers Provence. However, the legend persists. Dan Brown claims that Madeleine spent her last years in Provence has its roots in the tales of medieval France "

Do non-Catholic Christians believe Mary had the free will to obey or disobey God?
The usual response of some non-Catholics appears that Mary had almost no say whatsoever, and that Jesus would if she really wanted to or not just because God said it be. Do you really believe this? If yes, do you believe in free will at all?
I am a Protestant (non-Catholic) Christian and I believe that yes, Mary had free will, just like the rest of humanity. It was not divine, even if it was chosen among all females in particular for this purpose – it was a human being with a human body just like the rest of us. She made a choice and she chose to do the will of God made on earth.
