How to become a professional artist

Countless people paint or draw for a hobby, and many of them to time consider amending their hobby into a profession. Encouraging well-meaning friends is often the catalyst for this metamorphosis: they often offer comments such as "you could sell," or "you could live for it".

The truth is than becoming a professional artist has little to do with artistic ability: the transition is quite becoming a businessman and learn to sell.

If you plan to turn your hobby into a career, starting point should be to write a business plan ("Fail to plan, plan to fail"). This concept may be foreign to many, but a plan is a little more to put your ideas on paper, and thereby try to recognize all aspects of the business you need to consider, and steps to address inevitable gaps in your knowledge.

The most important element of a business plan is a simple statement of what you intend to do, and why. Whatever your reasons, as you progress towards your goal, you need to constantly check that your objectives are met. For example, if you want to become a professional artist primarily for the pleasure and satisfaction (and you do not plan to make a fortune along the way), you must check that your movement towards professional status is to give you pleasure and fulfillment. If not, you need to rethink or stop this you do.

Your next business plan needs to address all issues of marketing and finance: what kind of people you will sell, how will you advertise your services to them, how much money they pay, how much will they buy, etc.? Writing your plan business may take some time (several weeks or months), and require much research. There are many sources of information on planning activities, so I will not dwell on details, but rather give some general advice.

1. Do not include friends in your market research. They are too likely to provide the answers they think you want to hear. You need objective information and opinions.

2. When pricing your work, use the Internet to establish what the artists similar charges. However, to your own money to validate whatever your research reveals. Work on what would be your hourly rate for a typical work, and decide if you are ready to work for that amount of money. Remember that a considerable amount of time can be devoted to negotiating a sale or commission, and packaging / display / delivery finished works of art. You can find that adds several hours for each image sold.

3. When marketing light, never forgetting the obvious. Just tell people that you meet that you paint or draw is marketing. If you are going to invest time or money into advertising, make sure it is specifically targeted to your customers. For example, if you paint portraits of dogs, to target the owners of places dog stands (veterinarians, pet shops, dog training clubs, competitions dog, etc..)

4. Do not overestimate the value of the Internet as a marketing tool. It can be a tremendous effort to become visible on the net there is a massive competition and relatively little research has been done using keywords related to works of art. It is an interesting marketing tool, but should not be your only marketing tactic.

5. Marketing is a work in progress that you will never end. Plan to make it part of your working week – forever!

6. Think considerable customer service, and how you can create confidence customers. Many artists do not try to deposit the commissions, and the palace no financial obligations on the customer to purchase work if they are not happy with it. Ask yourself, how can I encourage my clients to choose before any competition?

7. You need to make financial planning. At a minimum, you should develop a system of accounting. It is essential to record all your income and expenses and have an accurate picture of how much profit (or loss) you do.
You may need a little seed money to start. Banks, the Council arts and local authority plans to start a business may be able to provide funds. But guess what? The first thing they ask to see is a business plan and financial forecasts. Estimating your income and can be extremely difficult. Do not assume that because you are able to produce two paintings a week, you can sell 104 paintings a year, from the start!

8. It is very likely you will experience times when you've got no job, no sales and no income. March and September are still quiet moments for me! Explore other types of work you can take when you do not have jobs work of art (as a part-time job, or another jurisdiction), and to consider diversification (you may prefer to paint dogs, but perhaps you need to do cats, too?).

9. The hardest part of self-employment is still concentrated and motivated. Have a work plan can help you. It may be simply a list of tasks to meet specific deadlines.

10. Find out all the help and advice you can. Do not assume you know the answers to each question, because chances are that you do not. Another advantage of having a business plan is that it allows an other (perhaps a professional advisor in business – available free in most cities) to verify that you have thought of everything, and developed good proposals.

Have you heard of this artist who has linked a dog as a "piece of art?"?

There is a video below: CAUTION! The graphic images. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVb7dkSfpFQ What are your thoughts and opinions? I think he is sick and this man is not an artist, is an animal abuser.

Bloody hell. Have you seen his back? The poor creature is really terrible to think that events. How can the land application of his art? " It's so medieval – is this new-type of bear baiting or something thing?! It should be stopped, not encouraged! [Edit I], too, did some research and it was not a hoax, but the dog is apparently alive – he was still bound to three hours a day if before he had managed to escape. The intention of trapping a dog like that is terrible in itself, however, I am always appalled by an animal to cope with this.
