A lot of this depends on the cat. Some are more highstrung and nervous than others. Some are very laid back. Some are hyper with lots of energy. But in general, here’s what I’d say –

1. The older cats get, the thing they most like to do is sleep. It’s normal for a healthy cat to sleep 16 to 20 hours a day.
2. Cats generally don’t like water, traveling, or anything that disrupts their routine.
3. If a cat doesn’t like what you’re doing, he’ll snarl, swat, hiss, meow, or try to run away. You won’t have to guess if a cat doesn’t like something.
4. Cat meows can mean they’re hungry, thirsty, want to go somewhere – like if you have them shut in one room and they want out, they want attention, or they don’t feel well. As you get to know your cat, you’ll learn his vocabulary and be able to tell what he’s trying to express.
5. Cats show they’re afraid by hiding, arching their backs & puffing out their fur, hissing, snarling, and/or running away.
6. The kind of toy a cat likes depends on the cat. Some like to chase balls, some like the little fur mice, some like scratching posts, some like paper wads, some like to chase string. You should experiment and see which toys get your cat’s attention.
7. Some cats are really picky about their kitty litter. Others don’t care. Some cats are more picky about whether the box is clean enough to suit them as opposed to what kind of litter you use. Most cats are pretty low maintenance about this. I recommend trying scoopable litter, it is the easiest way to keep the box clean and fresh. You should scoop out the box every day if at all possible.
8. One cat generally won’t make for a smelly house as long as you keep the litter box clean and don’t leave canned food sitting out, or dirty catfood tins in the trash. Cats are very clean and tidy animals and won’t smell the way some dogs can.
9. Yes, it is best to introduce the cat to the house a little at a time. Cats are often uncertain in new situations and like plenty of time to explore new surroundings.
10. I like PetSmart more because of their corporate commitment to helping animal shelters, and they don’t sell purebreed animals. Don’t patronize pet shops that sell purebreed cats and dogs. Most likely, those stores don’t check to make sure the breeders treat their animals humanely. If you ever want a purebreed, you should buy directly from a breeder so you can inspect the facilities yourself. This is for your benefit to make sure you’re getting a healthy pet as well as the benefit of the animals. But of course with so many millions of homeless cats and dogs, the best thing to do is adopt from your local animal shelter!
11. If the mats aren’t too bad, you can try clipping them yourself. Whether you should go to a groomer depends on the cat – if he’s patient and tolerant about being combed and handled, you can probably do it. If he’s feisty and fidgety, it’s probably best to go to a groomer.
