Colic: humans and horses
Colic is a problem that humans and horses share. But unlike with babies, including colic is only a secondary problem that will disappear after a few months colic in horses is a serious problem that must be addressed immediately.
Colic
Colic is a problem in the digestive tract characterized by pain in the stomach or abdomen. So far, there is still no reason why this occurs in babies. Experts believe that colic arises from gas in the intestines. In babies, colic starts as early three weeks.
The first signs are of course frequent crying and screaming that can last from one hour to five hours non-stop. It peaked during the second month and lower during the third month. At the end of the fourth month, incidents of colic will just stop.
And if there really is no great danger posed for colic babies, parents are still worried because of the amount tears that may follow. Because there is no known cause, there is also no cure or specific solution. In fact, the only thing that parents can do is to experience colic as painless as possible. This is done by putting babies in comfortable positions, as in swaddling clothes walking or making them listen to soothing music. Parents should avoid giving the food too because it will exacerbate the problem.
Horse colic
Colic in horses is not the same. In addition to being a serious problem, colic in horses may appear at any time, any age. The same reactions are caused in horses. They too will weep and moan, prancing and that everywhere. In severe cases, they may even become so wild that they will assume awkward positions and almost against nature just relived pain.
However, horse owners should remember that colic in horses has a very different beginning. Unlike with humans, where the pain can be easily felt and demonstrated by crying, the horses cope alone through the apathy and lack of energy.
They will begin to refuse food and no appetite to eat. It's a sign that horse owners lack often trying to cope with colic. Remember, they do wild and restless when the pain is too severe to bear. Otherwise, they suffer in silence.
Wired differently
Horses can not also cope with colic in the same way humans can. Because of their body structure different body system, and they are not able to vomit or relieve the pressure they feel in their stomach. For this reason, pain and the problem can accumulate inside, thus aggravating the situation. That may be why colic in horses is much worse. Indeed, while some horses do not respond to treatment and, possibly, get well, most deteriorated despite medication and treatment.
Another reason for colic is a problem with horses is that they are constructed in different ways. Passages blood and food in their bodies are much more narrow: thus, more susceptible to impactions and obstructions especially with food.
When suffering colic, it is important that you call a veterinarian as soon as you can to help him administer the appropriate treatment. Also make sure that your horse has no access to solid foods such as hay or grass. The only thing that the horse is allowed to take in water.
