I bought a teddybear hamster a week ago who still seems to be very hostile and frightened. What should I do?
Every time I open the cage to pet him or let him get used to my scent he runs and hides. I bought him for my 5 year old brother but he wont let either of us pick him up, or touch him.
running and hiding is a pretty good sign for a teddybear hamster. normally they bite….
they really aren’t very social animals, even with their own kind. they are mostly kept as pets for their cuteness factor, but since they have such nice fur, people can’t help but try and hold them, and pet them.
as long as he isn’t biting, i’d say keep at it. he is scared now because he doesn’t know what to expect. if you can manage to catch him and hold him, just be gentle and pet him and keep him relaxed. then he will associate your smell with comfort and good things, and hopefully hide less. if you are messing with him during the day, he’s probably just trying to get some sleep. (hamsters are nocturnal, so aren’t a great pet for kids who sleep at night.) he should be more active during the night and maybe more willing to play. a young hamster should be pretty curious and tameable. if yours is mature, you might just have to accept that he doesn’t like people. they are still nice to watch though.
for this type of animal, it’s probably not the best idea to lure him out with food, because they have bad eyesight and most are very bitey. you don’t want your hands smelling of tasty things. also, if he’s that scared, he won’t take food from you anyway. once he is really tame, you can handfeed him as a reward for good behavior.
