How do I stop my dogs barking at passersby?
I have 2 Bernese Mountain Dogs aged 4 and 1. They are usually well behaved, really good natured and generally lovable but any time anyone walks past our house or garden they loose the plot; running around and barking. They’re not threatening but because of their size and the noise they produce people are quite scared of them. How do I stop the barking?
Pratice recalls (come) with them. Practice, practice, practice. Practice inside, practice in the yard with them on leash, practice one at a time and both together, practice with distractions. Enforce it – don’t call them if you then have to spend five minutes chasing them around or you don’t feel like getting off the couch to make them come. When they come to you, praise like crazy and give them a few treats (cheese, hotdog, chicken, carrots – dry dog biscuits won’t be enough).
Then, call them to you when they are barking at people. If you have done your work they will leave the fence and come racing to you because they know really good stuff is in store.
