Jim
How would you have survived during the Jim Crow and civil rights era?

If I had been alive during the Jim Crow and Civil righs era I’m not sure how I would have survived becuase I would have proboaly been insisted on having firends other then black friends and sharing first kiss’s and the like with people other then black people so maybe thats just it maybe the answer is in the question maybe i wouldn’t have survived

Actually, you probably woudn’t have. It would have been ingrained in you, from the time that you were a little boy, that society says that you are not equal, that you never could be equal, and that trying in any way shape or form to be equal would get you lynched. Also, there probably would have been a neighborhood around you that would have reflected a lot of positive images of black people. So, you wouldn’t necessarily want to leave your people for someone else because you’d probably understand what a black community is all about. And your community would instill in you that you are indeed black AND equal although society did not.

While you might still have the attraction, you would know without a doubt that if you acted on it that you’d be killed for sure – and not only you, but your family and random men, women, and children in your neighborhood. (Terrorism is nothing new.) So, even if you were willing to give your life for a kiss (though I can’t imagine why you would do so), you might not want to trade in the lives of your family and friends.

Instead, you would have spent a lot less time worrying about kissing white women and befriending other people and a whole lot more time trying to figure out how to combat Jim Crow. Your love for different cultures would have probably propelled you to want to join with different groups of people – and about how you and your people could do so safely. So you might have been involved the budding civil rights movement which began in the 30s and 40s. Or you’d probably try to figure out a way to leave the country. Lots of people did that during that time – so that they could live in freedom.
